Ridges on Thatch Picture Competition – Winner
|
A tremendous response to our Ridges on Thatch picture competition – thank you to everyone who sent in entries, they are all fabulous and show the great variety of styles and patterns. With many thanks to our impartial and talented judge Claire Kitcher – CK Art for making the tough decision. “Firstly, thank you very much for asking me to judge this competition! I’m flattered. I had quite a list of possibles, as the work thatchers do is just jaw dropping. It’s taken me so long to finally decide. In the end, I had to go with my artistic eye, and this shot is just too beautiful not to stand out to me. The hares on the ridge are so well highlighted against the beautiful sky, I feel it’s a worthy winner. Sorry I couldn’t pick more pictures as close seconds, there quite a few, but this has to be my favourite.” Congratulations to C Dodson our winner, we will be in touch about your prize. |
Thatch Fire Safety Reminder

| After a long hot dry summer, it was very concerning to hear that a thatched property caught fire due to an out-of-control bonfire.
Our reminder is to always be aware of the fire risk to dry thatched roofs. This is also a good time to remind you that any working solid fuel appliances and chimneys need to be checked and ready for when they will be needed. |
HETAS – Update at Last!
| HETAS have updated their consumer information regarding thatched properties (in May this year, 6 years after the comprehensive research). Their website now has a brief overview entitled “Installations in Thatched properties” added on 19th August. |

Thatch of the Month

Our Social Media “Thatch of the Month” pictures got us thinking about some of the amazing thatch images we have shared.
Why dont’t you send us a fabulous thatch photo. You will always be credited on any we use (if you want) and it may even end up as Thatch of the Month! A great opportunity to further share the variety and beauty of thatch.
What about a Gallery of these Thatch of the Month shots? Hmmm that’s probably a good idea too.
Email us some of your lovely thatch pictures
Many thanks, in anticipation and for those who already have.
Straw Harvest Update

After previous wet Winters, this Spring and Summer have brought the challenges of not enough rain. Thatching straw is now all harvested and we have been told the majority is of reasonable quality. The amount has not yet been quantified but as there has been previous shortages it is unlikely to completely compensate for those harvests. Time will tell.
Would be so good if Defra and others would understand the importance of growing thatching straw for the maintenance and continuing care of our traditional thatched cottages. These cottages are world renowned, a huge asset to the country and need, in our opinion, to be prioritised more highly.
Great thatching straw harvest picture with many thanks to A Marriott.
Thatcher Thursday

We rarely do such social media requests for help but last Thursday we did…..
Desperately need a Longstraw Thatcher for a listed property in Suffolk.
The homeowner has waiting 5 years for a thatcher who is now injured and unable to do the work. We have given him some potential contacts but putting this out on social media and in here is a way to expand the reach.
CAN ANYONE HELP?

Wednesday Windows. We love these windows and thatch shape on this unusual building. Thanks to D. G. Shelley Master Thatcher Ltd for this picture.

Great info from our Associates Heritage Cob and Lime
Why cob works in the UK? Temperate climate suits the breathability and thermal mass of cob. Cob has been used in the UK for at least 1,000 years, with some surviving buildings dating back to the 13th & 14th centuries. Regional hotspots include areas such as Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, parts of Wales and areas with suitable subsoil and mild, damp climates.
Worthy Wednesday. Appreciating this unique thatched property with its tall chimney, complex design and character! Thanks to K Beverley for the picture.

2nd May – Frustrating Friday. Too many thatch fires in the last few weeks. This time of year seems to be a problem. Is it lack of maintenance & checks on chimneys, when solid fuel burning? Both open fires & woodburners? Do you have a bird guard? Please read our Thatch Fire Safety Leaflet, understand & reduce the risks.
Monday Mention. Our Associates at SMF Crouch are pleased to announce their Thatch Fire Retardant Spray is now being made in the UK and Rebranded as TSFireshield.
Wednesday Wexford Woman – Interesting article in Agriland.ie “29 yr old Wexford woman with a master’s degree in architecture is currently one of 14 learners on a thatching course”. Devised by the The Heritage Council in partnership with Kilkenny and Carlow Education and Training Board. Great to see the enthusiasm and respect for what is involved in thatching and that there are more people learning the craft in Ireland.
Monday Mending. A repair is sometimes the best solution to keep a roof going, in difficult times…

Wednesday Well Done! To all the busy Thatchers out there maintaining our roofs and working in all weather!

Wretched Wednesday. Stoke on Trent thatched cottage fire caused by lorry hitting electric cables which fell onto the thatch. We feel for the owners as this type of fire is an accident no-one would could have anticipated. Glad no one reported hurt.
First Friday Finial Fun. Thanks to K Steadman for their great finial photo – busy with lots of finials! Keep them coming folks (by email please)
Worldly Wednesday. How about Sanok Open Air Museum in Poland? Plenty of interesting thatch here.
Farmer in S Staffordshire has a field of about 8 acres of thatching straw ready to cut. Anyone interested, email us and we will put you in touch.

Monday Mention – Last month Creative Ireland and Offaly Heritage hosted an event. This honoured the tradition of thatched houses and included a short film Harvest Home on the art of thatching.
School Holidays Underway – Who is staying in a thatched hotel, B & B or holiday cottage this year? This thatched hotel is next to a thatched pub, perfect! The Pilgrim, Marchwood.

Monday Mood – How do you feel about historic homes in Ireland using Water Reed instead of Straw?
Our Thatch Directory Chimney Sweeps who offer an essential service to thatch property owners. Make sure your chimney is clean, checked and ready before you use it!
Wednesday Where are you visiting this summer? Guess where these ruins and lovely thatch are? UPDATE – Corfe Castle, Dorset.

Update from the Romford Recorder on the completed restoration of the Upminster Tithe Thatched Barn. Partnership between National Highways and Historic England. Adorned with an ornamental block ridge and finial too.
What do you all think?
Buckinghamshire Council blocked a plan to replace a 19th Century thatched property’s roof with solar panels. What do you think about this?
Spar Making via The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings – A spar making course 6th Nov in Wiltshire Heritage and Rural Skills Centre NT
“with 8 fully-funded bursary places for coppice workers, thatchers and others to learn how to make hazel spars for thatching”. A hybrid CPD training day which may well be of interest to conservation officers, architects, surveyors and homeowners etc.
140 year old historic oak tree remains after thatched roof owner applied to have it felled over concerns about it crushing their home. It’s not just historic homes which need preserving!
Thatch Tale – Bee Skep

We keep bees at thatch HQ. We were happy to help when initially contacted about heritage wheat supplies for growing to make bee skeps. Did you know that bee skeps are generally made from thatching straw, which is the right length straw to produce a good skep (modern straw varieties are now definitely too short).
How thrilled we were to then receive incredible pictures of a well made skep, brambles were even used to bind it together. Brilliant work. Many thanks for allowing us to share this fascinating alternative use for thatching straw.
Apprenticeship Update
|
Following its closure on 1st June 2025, the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) is transitioning to Skills England. This has seemingly had an impact on the Thatching Apprenticeship and we will update you as soon as we know more. Not seeing the benefit of this transition currently……….. |
Article for Sweepstuff

We were so pleased to be able to contribute an article entitled
Thatched Properties – Why Chimney Sweeps are so Important for the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps August 2025 Magazine.
Working Together is our motto. The role chimney sweeps play in sweeping, CCTV inspections, checking stacks, maintenance of appliances, certification for insurance etc is hugely important in reducing the fire risk and improving safety. We are always happy to add knowledgeable and experienced sweeps to our Associate lists.
Please get in touch if you are a sweep or chimney engineer wishing to join us.

And we have more planned so please keep your eye on our articles section on the website. As usual we will let you know on social media.
Working Together on Thatch Fire Safety
|
We were pleased to be invited to assist the Fire Service with reviewing and improving their Thatch Fire Safety Advice (watch this space for an update). This advice is to be shared amongst more than one area so it will have increased benefit. Reducing the fire risk is hugely preferable to dealing with a thatch fire so promoting the up-to-date advice and information on causes etc is important. We are also involved in looking at recent thatch fires, and hopefully the causes, so that we can better understand and keep improving advice. |
Our New Picture Competiton
“Thatch with Character”
|
Our next Picture Competition “Thatch with Character” is now launched. Does the characterful cottage above look like it has a moustache? Thatched properties are widely varied and show a range of characterful traits; from design, shape, roof style, windows, construction etc …. Some cottages even look like faces!! We love them all and thought it would be entertaining to have a bit of fun with a competition to show off their “personality!” We look forward to receiving your email entries (up to 6 per person). |
