Website Updates/Articles
The Thatch Advice Centre website is regularly updated throughout the year with additions to existing information, new articles, pages and galleries etc. Here is a summary from the last 6 months:-
Blake Cottage – Proud to promote the efforts being made to preserve Blake Cottage in Felpham, Sussex
Tom Allan’s recently published book On the Roof, A Thatcher’s Journey and where you can buy it.
Many Thanks from 2024 Your thanks and appreciation for the help, advice and assistance we have given, throughout the year.
Rebuild Costs With great input from our Specialist Insurance Associates. Please read and be informed on this important issue.
A Gorgeous Gallery of Ridges on Thatch picture competition entries so far (and a few of ours too!)
Thatch Insurance Article on Roof Condition with great contributions from our Insurance Associates. Helping explain why this topic is relevant. Watch our website/social media for more insurance related information in the next few months…
We updated our 7 Signs of Pests in Thatched Roofs article with more useful pictures and information.
RSPB Tay Reedbeds With great help from RSPB in Scotland our article about the balance being created in managing the beds for wildlife and to produce Thatching Reed. Great supporting pictures on this exciting development.
Thatching Straw Issues 2025 Our extensive, inclusive article on all the thatching straw issues and their connections, including mentions of initiatives already taken in order to attempt to improve things.
Ridges on Thatch Picture Competition Progress

We have received some fabulous photos of Ridges on Thatch for our picture competition. The gallery (of entries and other lovely pictures) is up on our website and regularly updated with entries. We are happily promoting the entrants (thatchers, homeowners and others) on our social media as well.
The closing date for this competition is Midnight on 1st September 2025. Keep your snaps coming and show everyone the variety and wonderful look of all the ridges. Great opportunity for thatchers to show what they can do, property owners to proudly show us their roofs or for keen amateur photographers to take that perfect shot?
Issue with SPAB information – Update
At last, after a bit of nagging from us (via Historic England, who use them for advice), it appears that SPAB have removed their out-of-date information from their website regarding thatch fires. We felt this was very important to reduce the confusion it caused. Sadly, no courtesy of a response to us, but at least it has been updated now. Hoping we can work together moving forward.
Recent Spate of Thatch Fires

A spate of thatch fires in mid-March was of huge concern and we did a social media post to draw attention to this. Then there was another fire….
It is important that thatched property owners and occupants understand and reduce their fire risks. Individual properties have differing risks so please read our Thatch Fire Safety Leaflet and minimise them accordingly.
Knowledge and comprehension of the fire risks enables you to lessen them.
Apprenticeship – Finally

The Thatching Apprenticeship (2 year programme) is “Approved for Delivery”.
Training Provider and End Point Assessment organisation are confirmed. Also the Instructors and Assessors are identified.
NB. “This is the only approved Apprenticeship that is recognised and can be called a Thatching Apprenticeship.”
This is awesome progress and October 2025 is the planned start date. Spaces may be limited.
- are interested in this apprenticeship
- are a thatcher looking for an apprentice
- are already in the industry with no qualification or part way through your training (a shortened time for relevant applicants).
Watch our website for an article coming soon with more information on this exciting opportunity. Those who have already emailed us will be updated as well.
Training and learning will always continue with thatching, but this thatching apprenticeship is a huge leap forward which has taken the team of thatchers involved a lot of time and effort.
Thanks and very well done to all concerned for the hard work in getting it here (you know who you are). To our trainers and assessors…… inspiring times ahead.
Is this the start of good self-regulation and de-fragmentation for the thatching trade? We hope so.
Calling all Future Apprentices and current Thatching Trainees…
Time to get ready for a few weeks at college, enhance your learning and prepare for a recognised thatching qualification. You will not miss much ‘work’ with your master man as courses will be scheduled for the less busy times of year.
Email us your name and contact details
e.g. if you are interested in learning to be a thatcher, want to join the apprenticeship or a thatcher looking to take on a trainee.
Interesting Enquiries

- Empty Pub change of use and insurance issue
- Marram Thatching – Sustainability
- Architects – various conversations from design, to materials and even positioning of a new thatched roof
- Receiving information from our friends and Associates and promoting relevant information on our social media.
- Woodland Potential – Discussion with coppice groups and owners on potential wood for spar making.
- Plenty of enquiries from abroad offering thatching Water Reed and other thatching supplies e.g. wire netting etc. Perhaps we have an idea….
- Estate agents and purchasers of thatch, who have no previous experience of our lovely roofing material, have been in touch with hordes of interesting questions. Perhaps another article is needed on the website?
- Helping people find thatchers who they have lost contact with. Surprisingly, several enquiries with homeowners looking to locate specific thatchers.
- Thatch and Storms – discussion on the “flex” of thatching materials over slate tiles etc.
- Several students have been in touch. Some have valid and interesting requirements for assistance, others seem to have no idea what they are asking about and just want us to do their work for them
- Thatch Insurance – Still an important issue and a problem in Ireland. Loss of insurers in the UK gave many an upset with short notice on no cover but we have directed them to our Insurance Associates and have had great feedback.
- Several homeowners with concerns over roof condition, we have advised on this and also moss and lichen situations.
- People looking for old thatching material for a variety of uses.
- Plenty of pest enquiries, from rats to birds and insects we have had them all come our way.
- Difference between bees, wasps – bumble bees / honey bees…. Wasps’ nests in thatch need removing, honey bees will be unlikely and other bees are probably solitary.
- We were sad to hear of a homeowner wanting advice on replacing thatch with tiles.
- Thatch Fires – liaising with others e.g. Fire Services and Historic England on various issues on thatch fires. We are still helping with the compilation of UK Thatch Fire numbers so please let us know (by email) if you have any in your area so none are missed. Awful to hear about 4 in 4 days in mid-March!
- Assisting with information on how to remove thatching crooks from a roof being renovated. Not an easy job.
Please Note. As a free resource we give our time for free, so please help us by checking the comprehensive information on our website first before calling or emailing. Thank you.
Join Us with Our Test it Tuesdays
| Almost every Tuesday we work hard on social media to remind people about testing their Smoke and CO alarms. It is an important fire safety message for everyone but probably even more so for those with thatch.
We would love to receive your pictures of Smoke and/or CO alarms preferably with someone testing them! Even some great pictures of your thatched property would be helpful in assisting in this great cause. We will always credit the contributor (if required) and, if you want us to use your business name, it could be some useful free advertising. This Test it Tuesday message is shared on appropriate groups on Facebook and have, several times, found the organic reach to be over 10K. Please help us. Like and share this important message.
Many thanks in anticipation.

Thatch of the Month

We really enjoy sharing information on our social media Thatch Thursdays and our special Thatch of the Month pictures are no exception.
Perhaps you have a great thatch picture you would like to share? Email us and we you may well see it highlighted in this spot. (There are only 12!) We have some planed but there is always room for more
Thatch Supply – Update

Following on from the thatch supply section in our last Newsletter, there has obviously been more publicised on this topic. When straw supplies are limited, it will therefore affect thatchers and then the homeowners and maintenance of our thatched buildings.
- Our very recent article covering the Thatching Straw Issues, as we see them, is a long one but it has allowed the inclusion of the intertwined situations involved. Please Read (Thatching Straw Issues) and understand more about the whole picture as we see it. We have had great feedback on this one.
- Historic England contacting us, to promote their updated guidance, came at just the right time to fit into this article.
- The thatching fraternity made a difference in the understanding on thatch fire risk and good progress was made to improve advice and safety, perhaps joint collaboration will make those who can help, assist in this thatching straw case? We can but try…
- Thanks also go to those who have, in recent past, made efforts in this regard to highlight and remedy some of the issues.
- We also were asked to write an article for the LPOC for their magazine entitled Thatching Materials and Availability…. #workingtogether again.
Anyone with ideas, relevant or positive input, please get in touch, and thank you for the great responses received so far.
Listed Thatch – An Idea

How wonderful is our heritage thatch, but how much is known about the roofs? When we look into the listings it seems that the roofing material and ridge styles are not mentioned. Do the councils know? With emphasis on like for like, how far back does the information go? Or should it go? Smoked blackened thatch is a good measure if left in situ but surely that cannot be the only benchmark used? We strongly feel that the thatched properties in the country both listed and not (there are a lot of fabulous unlisted thatched buildings) could be put on a register.
We have had enquiries on this topic several times over the years and it makes sense. Not only will this be an extremely useful document for the Fire Services, but it can be used by everyone as a useful tool for property owners, councils, conservation departments etc. To take it to the date of full rethatching, reridging and maintenance would be useful for research into longevity etc, but would probably be too much/impractical? What do you think? How can we, with no money but a lot of passion endeavour to help/assist in this regard? Would it be worthwhile?
We have ideas….

Thatch Thursday – An interesting article on the fundraising and work going on in Slovakia to preserve their rural architecture, and thatched roofs.
Weird Wednesday – Interesting article on a mummified cat found in the thatched roof of a Dorset Cottage which was being renovated! “Thought to be part of a superstitious act to bring good luck to the house” “to ward off evil spirits and to bring good luck, not so lucky for the cat!” BBC Hampshire & Isle of Wight
Shared – The National Thatching Straw Growers Association from Vivien Friend – “Such a shame so many of these traditional crafts and tools are dying out…. The long eaves knife, a tool distinctive to long-straw thatching, takes centre stage for shaping gable ends. Using a sawing motion, the thatcher trims the gable ends to a neat, square form, as demonstrated in the photo below from Suffolk, circa 1928. Eaves are often trimmed with a smaller version of this knife, a dedicated eaves hook, or even garden shears, depending on the task. Info taken from rural histories”

Wednesday Wonder – If you have ever seen the elusive smoke blackened thatch?
Thanks to R Eldridge – Redford for this picture.

Merry Monday – Austrey village in Warwickshire named by The Telegraph for having one of the best pubs in the UK. The Bird In Hand is thatched!
Wednesday Wondering. We had an enquiry regarding the Dorset Model Thatch Register? Anyone know anything about it as the company was apparently dissolve in 2013? Is it a case of an insurer asking questions which are very out of date? The Dorset Model has changed a fair bit over the years for sure (some help from us!) and is mentioned a lot for non-new builds now which can be tricky.
Fire Retardant Spray – Exciting News
Our Associates at SMF Crouch and Co Ltd are pleased to announced that their proven Fire Retardant Spray has been rebranded since Brexit, as it is now being made in the UK as TSFireshield.
TSFireshield is the same proven formula and treated roofs will be Certificated in the same way. Many of our specialist insurers offer premium reductions for treated roofs. Existing clients will be contacted when their roofs are due for respray as previously.
Thatch Tale

Following on from the Scarlett Malachite Beetle Article, we had an interesting email asking if any of our thatchers could help with providing some old thatching material. “Via Forestry England I’ve been asked to build 6 more of our beetle cottages which ideally I would fill and roof with old removed thatch”
Our obvious questions were “how much and where was it needed”. “A couple of car loads and Hampshire” was a great response. Thatch HQ are helping with this and look forward to sharing the pictures of the ‘cottages’ when they are complete.
Working Together

|
We have been pleased that Suffolk FRS (Facebook) have a great initiative on reminding followers about Thatch Fire Safety and sharing our Fire Safety Leaflet. We have had great feedback on the Thatched Roof Inspection Reports which have organised via our Master Thatcher Associates. Useful documents for insurance purposes, purchasers (or vendors) of thatch or even, sadly, dispute situations. They are comprehensive, include detail, images as well as indicative costings and are from thatchers not looking for work, so are independent. More than a tick box exercise. We have been in discussion with other associates on another initiative to help thatched property owners. Watch this space, our social media and the website for an update… |
Next Time

The next Newsletter should be out in 6 months’ time.
If you have anything you would like to contribute, let us know and we are happy to consider inclusion. Of course, we already have item ideas ready and waiting but more are always welcome.
We will also be announcing the winner of our Ridges on Thatch Picture Competition. Please make sure you get your (up to 6) pictures emailed to us by the deadline!
Fingers crossed to be reporting on a better straw harvest this year and on some positive responses to our Thatch Straw Issues article.
