Thatching Process

Battening

Battens are horizontally applied over the rafters and are what the thatch is attached to. The thatch is fixed by stitching, tying, crooks, or screws.

Battens are now usually made of sawn timber.

Thatching Abroad

Here the main thatching material used is Alang Alang, which is like palm leaves. It does not last as long as Straw and Reed but is the more local material!

The rick was dismantled over the winter and corn thrashed out from the straw.

Thatching Materials

Rick

Old harvesting method meant sheaves of corn were cut in the field and stored in a rick, which would have been thatched.

The rick was dismantled over the winter and corn thrashed out from the straw.

Thatching Equipment

Scaffolding
