Trohanny Cottage – Ireland

Following a recent book release, Tales from an Irish Thatch, we knew our visitors would be interested to know a bit more about the story of Trohanny Cottage, in Kells, County Meath recognised as part of Irelands National Heritage.

The proceeds from the sale of this book are going towards the preservation of this historic Irish cottage.  The run up to Christmas is a perfect time to share, for those looking for a unique present?

Our Link with Trohanny Cottage

The Thatch Advice Centre became acquainted with Trohanny Cottage, via social media @trohannycottage  Pictures of horses also tweaked our interest as we have the Thatchers prefix for our New Forest ponies, so there was a shared love of equines.

The posts from Aine McGarry were regular and varied and were definitely interesting to follow.  When we wrote our article on Insuring Thatch in the Republic of Ireland, we were kindly sent some of the lovely Trohanny Cottage pictures.

Trohanny Cottage, Background

We “met” on Facebook when Aine, and her late husband Joe, shared their journey with Trohanny Cottage and its restoration.  Trohanny Cottage is an 18th century listed cottage which was in a bad “dilapidated and uninhabited” state when they purchased it in 2000.  Its repair was obviously going to include the thatched roof.

Following the progress of this cottage’s sympathetic reinstatement, and growth to what it offers now, has been heartwarming.

Trohanny Cottage, Now

Trohanny Cottage is now a relaxing place to “slow down, reconnect, and find balance”.  It will be private tours in the summer and indoor and outdoor breathwork/mindfulness sessions throughout the year.

With breathwork and equine support practices it is “A Sanctuary for Stillness, Connection, & Healing”.   There are tours of the cottage (with additional four-legged welcoming committee!) and even a blog to follow.  And now a book.

Tales from an Irish Thatch – The Book

This charming book is a gathering of stories from the cottage’s history, its authentic restoration, up to present day.

This paperback includes 70 colour personal photographs and historical documents and will surely be of interest to many in looking at more than 200 years of life under an Irish  thatched roof.

The End?

We think there is more to come from Trohanny Cottage, and its owner, so are looking forward to staying in touch, and maybe sharing further stories.
