Historic Environment Scotland (HES) – Working with Thatch

About HES Working with Thatch

HES Stone wall with thatch

The free, one day ‘Working with Thatch’ event is part of Historic Environment Scotland’s ‘Master Builders’ programme.  Each open day in the series takes place on the fourth Sunday in the month during term time, and is suitable for the whole family. This month it is thatch.

The Master Builders days are designed to give everybody the opportunity to learn about traditional skills and materials used in conserving the historic buildings of Scotland.  The programme includes a ‘Working with Timber’ day in November. Previous materials covered have included lime and stone.

There is even a ‘log book’, where participants can collect a stamp each time they visit.

The Thatch Advice Centre were pleased to find another organisation keen to promote education for young people on traditional crafts and trades. Early exposure to events like this will inspire enthusiasm and help to bring the next generation into thatching.

Where to find the Working with Thatch day

The Master Builders events including Working with Thatch are being held at HES’ Engine Shed in Stirling. The Engine shed is a multipurpose venue offering advice on traditional buildings as well as exhibits and exhibitions on this vast topic.

About the Working with Thatch day

Children and adults will find out about the different plants used as thatching materials in Scotland and where they were sourced historically.  The open day gives hands on experience using the materials to thatch a model cruck frame.  It will be a chance to work as part of a team while learning about this fascinating craft.

This is a free drop in activity and is suitable for families with children 7 years old or above.  (Children must be accompanied by an adult).  As with any practical activity, it is advised to wear suitable clothing but protective equipment is provided where necessary.
