Thatch Advice Centre Newsletter No 28
Welcome Everyone!
What a crazy six months it has been. Last Winter’s weather was challenging for many of us. Please spare a thought for the poor thatchers who were working in torrential rain or freezing cold for weeks, then the weather improved and then snow!! At last now Spring does seems to be on its way – albeit a bit soggy around the edges!
We, hope, regardless of the weather you are all well. Thatch HQ is always busy, its amazing how many “thatch” related things we are involved with!
In February, we welcomed a new admin assistant, Jenna, to help in the office. There are plenty of enquiries to sort out! This, coupled with the new computer system CRM, means we are organising things more efficiently. It’s been a bit of a learning curve for all of us, but there’s nothing wrong with that!
Winter time is always when we get more calls on solid fuel burning and the last few months have been no exception, with everyone trying to say warm as cost effectively as possible. Read on for more updates on this. We also seem to have had more queries on pests … more on this too.
Social media is going well and we will share some of what we have been doing with you all in this Newsletter. Please follow us, like and share what we do and make comments – its surprising how much there is to be social about. It’s great to be friendly, share knowledge and expertise and be able to enjoy the growing thatch community. Being an “expert” in a group is also exciting but bear with us as we don’t spend all our time checking it out! Don’t worry if you are not on social media, we cover the important stuff in our Newsletters.
Many thanks to NFU Mutual Wessex for their sponsorship of the cost of sending out this Newsletter. This support is hugely appreciated as it allows us to keep the Newsletter free for our ever-increasing subscriber numbers.
So, here’s what we have in this one ..

“Most thatch house owners are concerned about fire risk. However, fire is no more likely than in a home with a conventional roof, as long as you understand what you are dealing with.
NFU Mutual Wessex is a local provider of insurance for thatched properties and we have a sound understanding of how best to protect your home. For example, we are familiar with all the different types of heating or stoves.
If you would like a copy of our guide, “Protecting Your Thatched Home”,

Articles, Newspapers and Magazines
We have been very pleased to have had input to articles in The Sunday Times and Daily Mail recently. Not only that, we have contributed to the LPOC Magazine “Thatch” article March/April 2023 edition. #workingtogether again.
Fires Update
Historic England have given us the numbers of Thatch Fires collated for 2022 as 24 fires. This includes one row containing 4 properties and one of 3. Not the perfect zero number we strive for but….
So far this year the number is 15 (including one of 5 in a row).
It should be said that the Fire and Rescue Service have not been contacted yet for 2022. Many are fixed in fiscal years and many do not supply numbers until April. One problem is that the Fire Service often tick the thatched roof box for their records and also the fire box (even if the roof is not included). This gives misleading figures which we are trying to avoid. In the past these figures have made things look worse than they were, and we keep our fingers crossed that the above numbers are pretty much right.
Sadly, the fire service said they are currently not looking to change how their data is collected, which is why we have been helping Historic England.
Please read our Thatch Fire Safety Leaflet Understand and reduce the risks.
Huge, thanks to everyone who have given information regarding any fires involving thatched roofs (and not just the listed ones!). By working together, we hope to get a truer number of what is really going on. So please continue to keep us posted so we can help keep Historic England’s collated numbers up to date and the most useful moving forward. It may even help with assessing risks more accurately and therefore insurance premiums?”
We have also been speaking to the Forensic Investigators regarding a recent thatch fire. Not what we are wanting to be doing but if our knowledge and experience assists in any way we are always happy to help. Interesting conversations, although we hope we don’t have to have too many of them…
Please be aware that after a dry spell of weather, the thatch is also dry and therefore more susceptible to fire. Two thatch fires in the week commencing 27th February were not what we wanted to hear about.
Some of the Enquiries we have Received
Our enquiries come from phone, email, webform and even snail mail! Here’s just some of the varied enquiries we have received over the last few months:-
- Lots of people looking for thatchers, we have explained that all thatchers are very busy with waiting lists.
- Plenty of discussions on solid fuel burning, woodburners, installations etc… The cost of living and fuel crisis has obviously triggered these additional enquiries.
- Insurance – a lot of enquiries on insurance costs and cover offered. We have directed many of these to our Thatch Directory insurance specialists and we have received good feedback.
- We are still looking for more insurers who cover higher valued re-build costs.
- Sadly a few too many property owners having a variety of issues with thatchers. Please remember they are an unregulated craft and keep your sensible head on.
- We have helped a lot of people on fire safety options.
- New build enquiries.
- Plenty of assistance for purchasers and homeowners with thatch roof inspection reports.
- Pest problems. (This has a whole paragraph within this newsletter).
- Unfortunately, we have been unable to assist all those who have contacted us with regard to grants and financial help for listed properties. If anyone knows of any pots of money let us know!
- Gas Safe recommended us for advice regarding a gas installation in a thatched property… Not really our thing but we had an interesting sharing of information.
- People looking for straw for a bee skep.
- Not forgetting the enquiries for input for articles from papers and magazines.
Bee Skeps
Plus: – a rather disconcerting enquiry from ….
The new owner of a gorgeous thatched building, with an apparently worn-out roof. They were 99% sure that the council will give them permission to take off the thatch and replace with plain clay tiles. “The application is only about half way through processing but we understand it is likely to be approved”. A sad state of affairs?
Not sure if it is a financial reason, insurance or something else? What do you think? Send us an email
Pest Problems Increasing?
We have had more enquiries than usual regarding pesky critters. From rats and mice in the thatch, to birds pulling out straw, it seems to us that the pest problems are increasing….. or is it just that more people are contacting us about these issues?
We hope to be updating our Pest Page soon with more pictures to help you with understanding what critters are causing problems and ways of dealing with them.
Can you Identify this Small Worm like Creature?
Can you help identify these worm like creatures, which have arrived in a cottage via the loft conversion – skillet ceilings which are insulated. They are apparently 3 – 5 cm long and over 20 have fallen into the rooms during cold weather this winter. The roof is Water Reed with a sedge ridge. We are not certain it is even to do with the thatch but identification is a good start. Better pictures have been requested this one is on a carpet so bit tricky to see …
Two local pest controllers have apparently “no idea”. We thought possibly some sort of millipede? Can you help – send us an email if you know or have a good idea/need more info.
Obituary
Sad to announce that Neville Howard Ayling (Joby) passed away on 15th January 2023. A proud member of the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Master Thatchers Association, cut his own reed in Norfolk, worked in many places including Weald and Downland Open Air Museum.
Apprenticeship Update
Despite a few hurdles to overcome, the apprenticeship is moving towards the important funding side. There are some people on the apprenticeship group’s radar who may be approached soon for some ideas and assistance. All offers of help, in any form, are appreciated.
Heating Your Home
In times of rising prices, it is noticeable that we’ve had more enquiries about ways to heat your thatched homes more cost effectively. From the expected solid fuel burning e.g., wood burning stoves, we have also been chatting about insulation, ground source heating, solar panels, even damp issues and Positive Input Ventilation systems! We always enjoy learning and have some brilliant associates with plenty of additional expertise too.
As always, please get in touch if you have any great ideas or useful information which may help some of our visitors. Perhaps we will need to plan another article? Anyone who assists is always credited. #workingtogether
New Associates
Heritage – Thatch and Non-Standard Insurers. They say “No 0800 number to call or long wait times involved,” “Tailored to you”
Certis Insurance Brokers. They come with glowing references and we are pleased to have them join us.
Relay Fire Safety Ltd. Fabulous references on their 30+ years of fire detection alarm systems, installation and monitoring services.
Cleaner Chimneys – Dorset – Marvellous to welcome sweeps with thatch experience to join us very recently.
Just Quote Me – Thatched Pub Insurance Specialists joined us just this last week. Welcome.
Irish Thatch Situation
We are still getting regular enquiries regarding the problems of finding insurers (and thatchers) in the whole of Ireland.
Here’s a couple of interesting links regarding the Irish Fingal Thatch Project and the Project and Report.
and a March 2023 update on some funding made available for repairs
Watch this space, our website and/or social media for any other updates.
Roof Inspection Reports
From roof inspections for insurance, those for purchasers of thatch or even in the event of queries or disputes, we have been happy to help and also it has been keeping our Master Thatcher Associates busy. They don’t do tick boxes forms which can be ambiguous, but provide full written detailed reports with relevant pictures on these important issues.
Feedback on these reports has been excellent as they are extremely useful documents. The reports are from experienced thatchers who are not looking for work and so give a fully independent and unbiased view on the roof condition, any works required immediately and moving forward, along with useful indicative costings which will be helpful for future planning.
Please note: Charges do apply.
Our Associates
Positive feedback on our Thatch Directory Associates is always so welcome. Thank you everyone who has made the effort to let us know about great service. From architects, chimney services and sweeping to insurance, fire retardants or thatchers, keep us posted.
If you offer excellent service and can provide great references, why not think about joining our growing community of thatch specialist services. Get in touch, no obligation, as we may well have a promotion running which gives “free” advertising incentives too.
Some of our Associates are not on our Directory – maybe too busy or semi-retired perhaps, but their knowledge and assistance are often available to us and not only is invaluable but most appreciated.
Spar Making
All construction materials have increased in price, and some have been harder to source than others. We have been pleased to see that efforts are being made to show interested parties what is involved in spar making; from the coppice wood it comes from to the finished spar.
More importantly, we will soon be sharing some information on some dates of spar making courses for those of you who are truly interested. The price of spars, along with other thatching materials, have gone up and so making them in the UK (rather than so many, currently essential, imported ones) must be a good way forward. Sustainable and reducing the carbon footprint too!
Sadly, it’s impossible to find out how many thatchers now-adays can make spars!! It is, obviously, more profitable for thatchers to thatch than make spars but, in times of shortage, it is a very useful skill to be able to make your own. More coppice craftsmen making spars will be a huge benefit, if they can get the managed woodland! But that’s perhaps another story…
There has been an increasing interest in spar making courses, as well as articles in the press on this subject.
All publicity is good when it comes to improving the quality and quantity of material supplies for thatching. Please watch this space as well as our website and our social media for more information.
Our Thatch Directory
We sometimes check on how many visitors we get to our Thatch Directory in a month. This screen shot is from November 2022. Pretty good we think for a very niche market. A lovely result and we are also so very pleased to have received such great feedback on our Associates.
Relevant and cost effective insurance has been high on everyone’s agenda and we have definitely pointed a large percentage of our enquiries to this section on our Directory where we have a great range on offer. Sadly, no update on cover for our friends in Ireland – yet.
Our time in inviting specialists to join us is, unfortunately, limited so, if you are looking for more “thatch” customers, and can offer great service, and provide excellent references, why not get in touch? We may even have one of our great promo codes on offer, which makes joining us very cost effective as well. 😊
At the foot of this email…. we have a list of all the Directory Categories we are populating with specialists to help people with their thatched properties
Thatchers on the other hand are all very busy and, as an unregulated craft, as we only want to associate with the good ones we know. It is great that we have the details of 100s of thatchers on our database and can get in touch with them and they all get our Newsletter. We have put up a useful article on finding a thatcher too…
Flashback Fridays
Plenty of content on our website worth sharing on our Flashback Fridays:-
Our requested article on Thatch Fire Safety from the Conservation and Heritage Journal.
An excited article on the formation of The Federation of British Chimney Sweeps. This “Alliance of Associations” has been an important development for their industry and we are pleased to be still #workingtogether
A Chimney Poem from a disgruntled thatched property owner in 2020. Summed up some of the issues we assist with. PS make sure your chimneys are at least clean for Santa!
We were proud to write an article for our CGA Associates magazine, explaining what we do, and why. The obvious inclusion covered our joint interest in Thatch Fire Safety. Always #workingtogether
2019 article on “Thatch at Ranworth Broad” – Still a great place to visit run by the Wildlife Trust in Norfolk.
UK Construction
Since Brexit and the pandemic all construction material prices have escalated. Thatching materials are included and it’s not just the reed and straw but spars, rod, screws and wires etc
Not what we wanted to be mentioning but, we are part of construction industry.
Scaffolding
The importance of scaffolding for works on thatched roofs cannot be over emphasised and has recently been drawn to our attention.
The property owner and the worker have a responsibility for Health and Safety.
What do you think would happen if someone fell of your roof while working up there? We know times are tight but is it worth taking unnecessary risks?
How busy are Thatchers?
Bad straw harvest in the UK, pandemic and global issues all contributed to the dip in thatching works carried out over the last few years. Now things are getting back to normal it is hugely evident that all thatchers, great, good and others ……. are busy, very busy. Many have waiting lists which is absolutely fine but please be sensible and aware that updated quotes may be required. Do you know how much your supermarket shop will be in 2025? Some thatchers we have spoken to are even turning down work rather than get too booked up. We have also heard of a few cancellations by homeowners, not sure of the reasons but could be financial. Interesting times.
Farmers Growing Straw
One of our experienced farmers (40+ years) who grows thatching straw – Triticale – has been in touch offering regular small loads of combed straw – Devon based. Let us know if you are interested… although no guarantees it won’t all be snapped up!
Thanks to R Matravers for his picture which we have used for your attention.
Contact Numbers
We have had at least one enquiry a day (7 days a week) since our last Newsletter… Crickey no wonder we are busy.
To make life easier, and to save us some precious time, we have decided to make the telephone number a mandatory field on our contact form.
Sharing Super Shots – Send us Your Pictures
The Thatch Advice Centre loves to receive super shots and pretty pictures of thatch. Not only that, we appreciate all the other diverse things which go on in between. From rubbishy roofs to chimney calamities, pest problems, finial fun photos or thatching in progress pictures. You get the idea. We can always make use of them on our website or in social media, you will be credited (if you want) and it helps us keep everything free.
So, even though we take plenty of pictures ourselves, more are always welcome. Thanks to M Standing for this verdant pic.
Social Media Interest
Social Media allows us to share interesting things with our friends and followers on a regular basis. Please join/follow us. Here are a few of the things we have been sharing, which you are sure you will find fascinating.

A witch finial for fun on Halloween and reminder about changing clocks. Thanks to C Mansfield for this great picture.
More great Wednesday Windows…. and design in this great project in Germany! Have a look for some design inspiration.
Progress in Ireland. The Department of Heritage in Ireland looking to establish an inventory of Thatched cottages and a Thatch working group has been set up.
Well done to Frinton-on-Sea Lawn Tennis Club for raising funds for their Thatched clubhouse roof & more….
We shared important advice from our friends at the Association of Professional Independent Chimney Sweeps regarding storing logs in close proximity to a working woodburner being a fire hazard. It’s also something sweeps see people doing only too often. Logs stacked against a working stove will dry out, can scorch and begin to smoulder! A fire waiting to happen.
Friday Feeling concerned… With this recent article from the Irish Times on the insurance situation in Ireland following Brexit.
An update on the Irish situation shared on a Wow Wednesday. “Thatched roofs and shopfronts to benefit from €9m in built heritage funding”
On Christmas Eve, Eve we thanked L Lindholm for this great Christmassy picture.
UPDATE – We were shocked to hear that this lovely property has since been devastated by fire.

Helpful information was shared for those keeping warm with solid fuel burning
As well as this one about the Clear Skies labels/ levels on solid fuel appliances..
We reminded everyone of the deadline to apply for The Platinum Jubilee Village Halls Fund being 20th January 2023 and our latest article. Bishops Cannings thatched Community Village Hall pictures were offered for use in this article. Do you know any thatched village halls, we have found a few!
A new pub has been built in Hartlepool and its thatched!
Good post from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service – we would say please don’t use sky lanterns at all – they are too risky to animals and property.
Another useful update from our friends at the Stove Industry Alliance on the Environmental Improvement Plan was shared along with a reminder to download and read our Fire Safety Leaflet and other articles on this topic – understand and reduce the risks. Working together is our motto.
Having put lots of enquiries through to our Specialist Thatch Directory Associates we asked anyone interested in joining us get in touch.
A wonderful ‘old’ Dorset thatched cottage is repaired traditionally. Great article from Homes & Gardens Magazine
We shared the free practical forestry training courses now available via our friends at the National Coppice Federation.
Butser Ancient farm was a great half term idea …. and there’s thatch !!!
Cheapest Guinness in Ireland, The Thatch Bar in Tuam, Galway! We had to share this because we love thatch and Guinness! #workingtogether
Thatch Tale – Splat
Here’s another reason why you don’t want vermin in your roof.
A thatcher sent us this picture of a roof which he was re-ridging. A previous mice infestation had apparently been dealt with, but he had not been made aware of this. Whilst working on the other side of the roof he heard a “Whoosh and Splat sound”.
Imagine his surprise on investigating to see that a big chunk of the straw coatwork had slipped down the roof. All that was apparently holding it on must have been the wire netting because all the fixings had been chewed through by the mice …..
For this reason, we recommend keeping traps or poison in the roof space at all times.
Disputes with Thatchers
Our Associates have reported being asked to do more roof inspection reports for disputes between thatchers and their clients. Sadly, we have also had too many enquiries with complaints about thatchers recently. Although most thatchers are independent, this prompted us to ask the various membership thatching organisations about their complaints procedures to help us deal with advising on these situations.
Understanding this will help us when we have contact from homeowners with issues. We were surprised that some responses were prompt (as well as useful) and others have been somewhat tardy. They will be chased up for a response and an article is planned which should help everyone in dealing with disputes – and save us time in advising on things we would prefer not to be doing. Watch this space.
Whilst on this topic, we cannot name names but, please be very careful if thatchers ask for large sums up front for materials. Perhaps, if you have to, better to pay when materials are on site (if you have facilities for good storage) so at least you have something for your money. Getting large deposits back, if things go wrong, may not be easy…..
Historic England – Update on Material Supply
Historic England have been looking at material supply issues, both straw and reed. This is a topic which we have been discussing with our relevant friends and associates for quite a while now.
We hope to keep you posted if anything relevant comes from it. Here’s hoping this will result in some positive progress and we look forward to seeing the report and findings from the research with interest.
Installing a Woodburner
Cost of heating means we have had a lot of enquiries about installing woodburner and solid fuel appliances.
We know that it is easy to say “Don’t have a woodburner or solid fuel appliance” but that is not helpful to many people. Bad situations will always get the most press but we remembered that there are many successful installations regularly maintained and sensibly used which have not had a problem. It’s a case of understanding and reducing the risk, like driving a car.
If you are thinking of installing a woodburner, please be aware of the following:-
Insurers will say use an approved person (HETAS are not the only option – OFTEC etc also can assist).
Make sure that if the chimney does not meet the building regulation of 1.8m that the chimney is stable enough to take additional weight should height need increasing.
If your property is listed, LBC will be required to increase chimney height.
Flue should be correct per building regulations e.g., insulated lined flue.
The new Clear Skies approved wood burners are also cleaner burning. Win win as less deposits up the chimney as well as being better for air quality too.
Our friends at the Stove Industry Alliance have recently updated us with information on cleaner burning. This information makes is a very interesting read. A shame that important things like this have been incorrectly reported by media recently which is wholly scaremongering and unhelpful.
Please read our Fire Safety Leaflet as well – understand and reduce the risks.
Over £2 million Rebuild Cost?
Hmmm, It seems harder to get insurance on properties with a higher rebuild cost, for example, over £2million. Some of our insurers/broker Associates on our Thatch Directory said they can help.
Good Neighbours
A lovely call from a gentleman who lived across the road from two thatched cottages. One of these thatched cottages’ owners had concerns regarding this gentleman’s occasional bonfires and so he contacted us for advice. A tricky one. Many insurers have provisions that bonfires should not be within 100m of your property, but what if it’s your neighbour’s bonfire which is within this distance? We discussed the potentially higher risk if the wind was blowing and the thatch was dry. Common sense stuff really.
This good neighbour said he had been having bonfires for years, did not burn when wind was blowing and would try and move his fire as far away as possible. That seems reasonable but, does a neighbour’s insurance cover them if it did cause a problem?
An interesting scenario, what do you think? Let us know and, similarly, if we get an update, we will let you know.
Gas Installations
Imagine our surprise to find that Gas Safe had suggested a plumbing and heating engineer should contact us with a “thatch related” gas installation query. We are not sure gas is our thing but it was a good talk through of an interesting situation for both us and the engineer.
Cautionary Tale
We are not the Thatch Police, but please be aware that we have had homeowners getting in touch with issues with their thatchers. Some of these relate to large deposits, unreliablity and workmanship etc… you get the picture. Please get your quotes in writing and be sensible with your money.
Currently everyone calls themselves a Master Thatcher regardless of training, ability or business acumen. So do your checks and remember that thatching is an unregulated craft. Unfortunately, there is always a few who spoil things for the majority.
Working Together
Our motto has always been “working together” because this is a great way to share information and knowledge. Most of what we do is either helping with thatch related enquiries or putting people in touch with specialists who can help. Many of our wonderful contacts are always busy but still find the time to help us with information, guidance and even articles.
Anyone who would like to contribute to or even write an interesting thatch-related article, please get in touch. You may have been working on an interesting thatch project, doing up an old listed thatch, dealing with a thatch situation… we are always interested to hear about such events. Or maybe just send us some of your wonderful thatch pictures!
The majority of the thatching fraternity seem to understand this motto and engage with us now. This seems to be a good way of bringing a somewhat fragmented, unregulated trade together.
Next Time
We are pleased to be able to have sponsorship for our next Newsletter in place so we look forward to bringing you are next Newsletter around October this year.
If you have anything you want to include, let us know and we will do our best.
Have a great Spring and Summer. We look forward to being in touch again later in the year
And Finally
Thank you from all of us and our Associates, for all your emails, social media engagement and lovely phone calls. Our community is open to all and we give hours of our time for free. Your lovely comments, feedback and pictures are really appreciated.
