Thatching Courses in the UK
All courses require students to be training with a thatcher.
There was only one course in the Country providing a National Qualification to the Thatching Industry. This was being run by Hereford College of Technology at Knuston Hall via the NETS (New Entrants Training Scheme) and funding for this has now ceased.
The College can acquire minimal funding now from Work Placed Learning but, unfortunately, it is inadequate to run their courses. They have applied on behalf of the National Thatching Training Centre to the Countryside Fund for further funding for two years to support the programme and a run a course which will lead to a National Qualification (Roofing Occupations - Thatching NVQ level 2).
They do have an option to carry out the level 3 qualification but there is a cost involved.
They hope to hear whether their bid for future funding has been successful by January 2012.
For more information on the above or to see if we have any thatchers looking for trainees/apprentices get in touch.
