Fire Safety Questions for thatch

1) Do Fire retardants affect the roof?

Phosphate based products  like Magma Firestop do not have a negative affect on the thatch.

2) Can I have real fires?
Yes real fires are fine. The chimney height should be well above the the highest point of the thatch, (at least 1.8m) Chimneys should have a lining and be well cleaned. Heat monitors for chimneys on thatched roofs can also be installed.
3) What fire retardant measures can be taken?
There are a number of measures that can be taken to help:
  • Fire barriers i.e. THATCH-SAFEĀ® or SuperLux can be installed under the thatch.
  • The thatch can be treated with Fire retardant sprays such as Magma Firestop.
  • Chimney heat monitors such as the Chimney Temperature Monitor can be installed.
(Non insulating barriers are not advised.)
